So your accountant says you need to spend a few dollars before 30 June to reduce the tax you'll need to pay. But why do we rush to stock up on stationery, new business furniture, or new equipment?
Going into a new year is the time to be planning for the next 12 months. What does your business need to hit your next milestone? In most cases it's either increasing revenue, or improving efficiency and decreasing costs. So how about looking at what you can do to push your business forward into the new year, instead of just tumbling in with some shiny new toys and a pile of stationery...
Here's a few ideas to consider for your end of financial year spend that might help grow your business in the new year:
- Business Cards - are your cards up-to-date? professional? do they make an impression?
- Flyers and Brochures - do your current promotional materials have accurate information? professional? just need a reprint?
- Graphic Design - updated logo, email signature, fridge calendars, something else you've been thinking of for your marketing?
- Email marketing - are you setup with MailChimp or similar to keep in front of your customers via email regularly?
- Building signage - looking tired or weathered? Need to be updated?
- Vehicle signage - are you driving around all the time, and missing an opportunity to have your vehicle as a moving billboard for your business?
- Photography - need new staff photos? new photos to use on Facebook or in brochures?
- Website - does your website need a few updates? a major renovation? something completely new? if you can't get the work done before 30 June, you might be able to put down a deposit or pay something upfront to help your tax situation after 30 June.
- Website and Email hosting - you might be able to pay for next year in advance, before 30 June
- Facebook - need some graphic design help to make your Facebook business page look professional? need someone to manage your Facebook page in the new year to post regular content and get some social engagement?
- Business Development - need some help working out what your next move should be in business? maybe engage a business coach/mentor, or explore some training options.
- Staff Training - you might be able to book staff in for some training events later in the year
With 30 June fast approaching, some of these things might not be achievable in the timeframe, but a lot of companies will take a full or partial upfront payment to get things started.
